1970s Handmade Thai Cotton Teddy Bear / Brown-Orange-Green
1970s Handmade Thai Cotton Teddy Bear / Brown-Orange-Green
Darling deadstock (never used, found in original packaging) 1970s teddy bear made from Thai cotton fabric that is guaranteed to bring joy & happiness to its new owner.
These all cotton handmade teddies feature a patchwork body, applique eyes & nose, and pert ears. They are packed tightly with high quality stuffing (one was torn and I got to see the silky cotton interior). They are plump and can remain seated upright on their own. As they are handcrafted, each varies slightly in size and scale.
These teddies are utterly charming and more than just a “stuffed animal” — they are textile art for your home — think of them as soft sculpture! Place on a bed, on the couch, on a mantle, squeeze them tight on a dreary day….the possibilities are really endless. There are only 4 of these and each one is a true one of a kind - no two fabric and color combinations are the same!
Background History:
These were discovered, well stored, in a home in Westchester NY, still packaged in individual bags and boxes since 1975. They belonged to the inimitable Mrs. Estelle Aronson who was a senior jewelry designer for Harry Winston in the 1950s -1960s. Her many closets and entire home reflected her discerning eye for design.
Estelle & her husband had a design business in the 1970s and they had this pillow imported from Thailand (they were still in shipping boxes from Bangkok). I’m not fully certain, but it is believed that she designed these and commissioned to have them made in Thailand. Her and her husband were apparently then distributing them (I found their 1977 wholesale order form) and fulfilling orders from their home. SO WILD! Details about their business and why these remained untouched in the house for over 45 years will forever remain a mystery. I’m just so happy to have found them and feel honored to find them homes.
