THE STORY BEHIND OUR CHOICE

Discovered in Paris, I almost overlooked this jacket completely. Sometimes I skip the black clothing section in a store foolishly thinking it's going to be "boring." Thankfully not this time. First I noticed the shimmer and then when I looked closer, I saw lobsters and noticed how good the quality was and my smile could not be contained. Playful motifs like this, especially when worked in like a secret that only those who look close enough will ever see, brings me a lot of joy. This was my first time encountering this label and I'm so happy I did. I love when clothing is whimsical and playful.

Franck Joseph Bastille is one of those obscure, largely forgotten labels that's worth collecting and looking out for. Franck Joseph was a Parisian fashion designer whose label, Franck Joseph Bastille, was active from 1985 to the early 1990s. Known for his inventive whimsical designs that were beautifully crafted, he worked from a small atelier near the Place de la Bastille in Paris alongside a five-person team overseen by Madame Monique who was a former lead seamstress at Yves Saint Laurent. I attached photos on a 1987 NY Times article that shows a photo of his shop and actually references this lobster design. How cool!
